Navigating through EDRS is done through two types of schemes: primary and secondary. The primary scheme consists of links organized as menu items such as the EDRS Main Menu on the left and the Case Action Menu on the right.

The secondary scheme EDRS uses consists of tabs. EDRS typically introduces new tabs once a menu action is clicked on. Tabs help organize the case's information into separate categories and allow the user to freely maneuver through the categories by clicking on their headers. The first tab, displayed by default, is the Welcome tab, which does not pertain to any specific case but is the starting point to opening a case. The Welcome tab is also reachable via the EDRS Main Menu, however, clicking on the Welcome function will conclude any ongoing actions and reset the Details section, whereas, clicking on a Welcome tab header will not affect the current ongoing action and allow you to view a list of your pending cases at the same time.
